THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF ASTRAL PROJECTION ( PEOPLE WHO WERE VERY ILL )

(II) PEOPLE WHO WERE VERY ILL

1.     CASE No. 22 - Mr G. J. Einarsson
EINARSSON cannot have been influenced by the accounts of others. He is an Icelander, ignorant of languages other than his own. No such accounts had been published in his language when, in 1910, he had his experience. The case was published by Muldoon and Carrington (The Phenomena of Astral Projection, Rider & Co. Ltd., 1951).
Einarsson felt weak and could not move. He said, 'I felt that some-one was coming. Then I saw a man come into the room. ... He seemed to read my thoughts, because he said, "You need not fear me. I invite you to come and see those places intended for you after death" ...
[cf. Statement No. 3, regarding 'deliverers'].
'All at once I found that I was standing upon the floor, looking at my own material body lying in the bed [cf. Statement No. 17] - The "I" who stood there on the floor, looking at the "I" on the bed, was so strangely light. I felt that it would be no effort to move. ... "Now we start off," said the man, and no sooner had he said it than we were off. ... I saw how the fjord was shiny black, for the mountains were reflecting the sea. ... We ascended slantingly into the air [cf. Rebell, Sculthorp, Hout, etc.] ... What I saw I shall not attempt to describe, because I lack words ...' [cf. II Cor. xii, 4].

2.     CASE N O . 23 - Miss Mollie Fancher
Miss Fancher was bed-ridden for nearly thirty years, and lived almost entirely without food. Prolonged illness and fasting are among the factors that favour the production of these experiences.
Her case (Mollie Fancher, the Brooklyn Enigma, by Judge H. Dailey, Brooklyn, 1894) was supposed to include multiple personality. Mollie claimed that, when out of her body, in trance, she experienced two distinct conditions. She said, 'Sometimes the whole top of my head seems on fire with the influx of light; my range of [clairvoyant] vision is very great and astonishingly clear [corresponding to 'super-consciousness' in the Psychical Body and to 'Paradise' conditions]. Then again, it seems as if I were seeing through a smoked glass, and my vision, or consciousness, is dim and indistinct' [corresponding to 'sub-normal' consciousness in the vehicle of vitality or 'body-veil' and to 'Hades' conditions].
Miss Fancher gave a number of examples of veridical information obtained while she was out of her body.

3.     CASE N O . 24 - Mr Horace E. Wheatley
'I am not at present a spiritualist in the accepted sense of the term,' wrote Mr Wheatley, though the experience he described was clearly of a nature that is usually regarded as typically spiritualistic. It was pub-lished in Two Worlds, Feb. 27, 1954 only because Mr Wheatley was concerned with the fact that so many people find it difficult to believe in an after-life. Like Oxenham, having had a 'vivid' experience of the after-death state, he felt it his duty to place it on record.
Writing from the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he was recovering from a coma, Mr Wheatley said, ' While I was still unconscious, I felt myself floating in an atmosphere of peace and serenity. ...
While in this beatific sphere, a local government officer I knew quite well came forward to meet me. He greeted me ... "Welcome Wheatley," he said, and then continued, "I shall have to see you later". And he slowly faded from my view.
'Now the interesting point about this "interview" is that at the time I did not know that this friend had "passed on". I was told it afterwards by my wife.' [There are many cases recorded in which dying persons have claimed to see friends or relatives who have died, but of whose death they have not been told. They say, 'There is so-and-so. Why did you not tell me that he had died?' On the other hand, it is said that there is no case on record in which a dying person has said something of this nature by error, the person 'seen' being actually 'alive'.]

4.     CASE N O . 25 - Mrs Gussie Dowell
Mrs Gussie Dowell, of De Lion, Texas, U.S.A., a nurse, informed me (in litt.) that she had had an out-of-the-body experience when she was eleven years old. Since then, although she has followed certain instructions for the production of astral projection, she has not suc-ceeded in repeating the experience. She thinks that this is because she has learned 'how easy to go, yet how hard to get back'. She has observed many deaths in hospital, and, like the supposed discarnates who have communicated details of their 'passing', she said, 'Always it is a peaceful "slipping away" that seems to be absolutely painless' (cf. State-ment No. 7].
Mrs Dowell's experience was as follows. 'I had been stung at the base of the spine by some insect. I began to get sick. The doctor failed to find the trouble. I became desperately ill and he gave me a hypo-dermic injection. Before lapsing into a coma I told Mother I was going to die. I was unconscious until four o'clock the next day. When I came to, my father was bathing my face with cold water.
'As long as I could feel anything, I suffered intensely. Then I became easy [= had vacated the body] ... I looked down and could see my body lying on the bed and my father working over me [cf. Statement No. 17]. In later years I have read of the experiences of people who say that there is a "silver cord". I had no "silver cord". I went to a place through a veil of mist [= through 'Hades' conditions - cf. Statement No. 41] high above the earth [into 'Paradise' conditions - cf. Statement No. 26]. I spoke to the men who were standing about the entrance, but was told to come back and live the rest of my life. The walls around this "Heaven" are pearly and translucent. I started back and it was not long before I awoke in my Physical Body, it seemed that I "blacked-out" at the same distance from my body when I approached it, and regained my consciousness, as when I left it.' [This is an interesting statement: Mrs Dowell evidently not only observed the momentary coma that, according to those of the 'dead' who were conscious of the process, occurs during the shedding of the body-see Statement No. 9 - but also had the same experience at the corresponding stage on returning. Mme d'Esperance was simi-larly conscious of both shedding and re-entering the body.] Mrs Dowell concluded, '/ am more understanding and sympathetic with people than anyone could be who had not had such a revelation. It made me a better person!

5.     CASE N O . 26 - Mr J. Redgewell
Mr J. Redgewell, ofParkhurst avenue, Barnehurst, informed me (in litt.) that, at a time when he was ignorant of psychic matters, having read no books on astral projection, etc., he experienced an exteriorization. Since then he has had several, though not deliberate ones.

Mr Redgewell was indeed a sceptic as regards the after-life. When ill, lying in bed, he was 'scared' by feeling his Physical Body 'dropping' and his Psychical Body 'rising' [cf. Statement No. 9]. Although he realizes that he had not projected far', the experience convinced him of the truth of survival. He no longer feared death.

While out of his Physical Body, Mr Redgewell tried, unsuccessfully, to attract the attention of his family by shouting at them [cf. Statement No. 28]. He found that he could jump over a wall which was much too high for him to clear in the Physical Body. He 'landed gently on the other side'. But this did not surprise him: he knew he could do 'seemingly im-possible things'.

6.     CASE No. 27 - Mrs A. Land
This case was published in Prediction, May, 1936: 'I was very ill. I fell into a deep slumber in which I seemed to be taken to the astral plane. An aunt who had died came and began to magnetize my arm (cf. Statement No. 3]. She took me with her and said, "This is the first stage when you come over here." It was very beautiful [= 'Paradise', cf. Statement No. 26]. I was there some time when I was told that I would have to return to my body. When I woke up, I found my mother distracted. She thought I had passed away. I believe that my spirit... was on the astral plane. It was a very similar world to this one but more beautiful [cf. Statement No. 26]. I know that death does not end all.'

7.     CASE N O . 28 - Mr Baeschly
Pachet (Thirty Years of Psychical Research, Collins & Co. Ltd., 1923, trans, by de Brath) gave the case of Mr Baeschly who, with his father, was awakened about midnight by great noises for which they could find no cause. Later they received a letter from America to say that Baeschly's brother had died, and that, shortly before his passing, he had awakened from a long coma saying, 'I have made a long journey: I have been to my brother at Brunatte.'

8.     CASE N O . 29 - Capt. Burton
This case was reported by J. Arthur Hill (Man is a Spirit, Cassell & Co. Ltd., 1918). Burton said, 'I had heart-failure. I found myself standing at the foot of my bed, looking at myself and the doctor [cf. Statement No. 17] and feeling very well and bright cf. Statement No. 26], though puzzled.
Then suddenly I found myself dragged violently over the bed-rail where I floated above myself; following which came a tremendous crash [= the 'repercussion', due to a rapid return of the highly 'vibrat-ing' Psychical Body to the slowly 'vibrating' Physical Body the effect resembling that of a severe clutch on a motor car - cf. Muldoon, Mrs Lester, Gerhardi etc.]. Then I heard the doctor's voice: "He is coming round". He had considered me dead for some time.'

9.     CASE N O . 30 - Mr Arnold Bennett
Arnold Bennett (The Glimpse) gave a resume of Theosophical teach-ings in the form of a personal narrative. We give extracts in Appendix VII.
